Sparking STEM Interest

In honour of National Science Week held from 30th September to 5th October 2024, our ISSA STEM Project brought a day of exciting science experiments to learners at our adopted schools. Throughout Science Week, our STEM Project partner, ScienceCEO, visited Mabomvini Combined School and Fairleigh Primary School in Eston, Bantuvukani Primary in Lamontville, Khwezi Primary in Sobantu, Khuphuka Primary near Sezela, and Baxoleleni Primary in KwaSwayimane near Noodsberg. The schools were presented with science kits and learners were engaged with hands-on activities to spark their curiosity and interest in science. At the primary schools, a children’s character mascot provided extra fun for the learners. Bantuvukani Primary School Principal, Mr Sosibo, said, “Thanks a lot to isikhondlakhondla sashukela (sugar giant) Illovo for taking education forward. Our science lessons will never be the same. They will be meaningful. We now have a science kit. Sibonga asiphezi (we won’t stop thanking you).” The STEM Project has empowered over 6,300 primary and high school learners and more than 70 educators across 12 schools. By providing crucial STEM education and training, we’re helping to increase pass rates and open doors to brighter futures.
