Illovo Sugar South Africa and Illovo Sugar South Africa -Downstream participated in the sugar industry oversight visit by the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Trade, Industry and Competition, held at the South African Sugar Association’s KwaShukela Mount Edgecombe premises.
The aim was for the Committee to receive an update on the sugar industry’s product diversification efforts emanating from Phase One of the all-important Sugarcane Value Chain Master Plan to 2030. Illovo’s display reinforced our "More Than Sugar" ethos, highlighting the separation of our Sugar and Downstream businesses and our diversification efforts to optimise the value extracted from every stick of cane. By harnessing sugar by-products, like molasses, bagasse, and alcohol.
Downstream has expanded its integrated portfolio and is maximising returns, with sustainable biobased products exported to global markets, including Africa, Europe, the United States, Asia, the Middle East, India, and China. The Reimagined Cane Industry Strategy means the sector is seeking to move away from being a sugar-based industry to becoming a sugarcane-based industry where the cane stalk’s full potential is unleashed for product and revenue stream diversification.
