Illovo Sugar South Africa (ISSA), in partnership with the Imbumba Foundation, honoured its 2024 commitment to support young girls stay in school without being hindered by period poverty. This promise was achieved through the donation of a six-month supply of sanitary pads, a vital contribution to help them stay in school and pursue their dreams.
This initiative was first made possible through the inaugural Illovo Kilimanjaro Expedition, where seventeen climbers from eight countries across Illovo Sugar Africa summited Africa’s highest peak to raise awareness about period poverty and advocate for girls' education.
ISSA employees generously donated sanitary pads, and the company matched their contributions. More than 2,000 girls at our adopted schools, including Lamontville High School, Sihle High School, Gobizembe High School, Mabomvini Combined School, and Siphosethu Primary School received the sanitary supplies again this year.
"Through our flagship Thuthuka Nathi Social Impact programme, we are proud to play a role in breaking down barriers to education and empowering young women because thriving communities begin with equal opportunities for all.” – Ntombifuthi Ntanzi Communications and Social Impact Manager.
Employees from across our mills were present during the distribution to offer words of encouragement and inspire young girls to stay in school and believe in their potential.
