Advocating for a Sustainable Sugar industry

Illovo Sugar hosted a high level government delegation at its Eston Mill, led by the Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Mr Zuko Godlimpi, in a strategic engagement facilitated by the South African Sugar Association. The visit formed part of ongoing efforts to strengthen collaboration between government and industry in support of a sustainable and resilient sugar sector.

The delegation included senior representatives from the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dti), the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), the SA Canegrowers Association, the South African Farmers Development Association (SAFDA), and the South African Sugar Millers’ Association. Their presence reflected a collective intent to align policy, investment, and operational realities across the sugar value chain.

During the engagement, our MD, Ricky presented an overview of the organisation’s operations, strategic priorities, and economic contribution. The presentation highlighted the critical role that a stable sugar industry plays in sustaining employment, supporting rural economies, and driving inclusive growth. It also provided a platform to advocate for continued policy support and investment that enable the industry to adapt, diversify, and remain competitive.

The delegation toured the Eston Mill, gaining first hand insight into milling operations, production efficiencies, and the quality control measures applied through laboratory testing. The visit demonstrated the scale and complexity of mill operations, as well as the importance of reliable infrastructure and supportive policy frameworks in sustaining industrial activity.

The visit took place ahead of the Sugar Industry Master Plan Signing Ceremony at the South African Sugar Association, a significant milestone in the industry’s recovery and transformation journey. Through the Master Plan, the dti and IDC have reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the reopening and sustainability of sugarcane mills. An initiative aimed at protecting jobs, stabilising supply chains, and sustaining rural livelihoods across KwaZulu Natal.

Our MD was among the signatories to this critical agreement committing to playing an active role in shaping a viable long term future for the sugar industry.
